INNER CORE

Your inner core, the body’s foundation of stability, plays a key role in day-to-day functionality. Without synchronous inner core activation, our bodies are more at risk for injury and pain. Symptoms like incontinence, back pain, hip pain, pelvic pain, even decreased sports performance can all be related to inner core dysfunction. Because it’s integral to nearly all movement, everyone — in every stage of life — can benefit from strengthening the system of their inner core.

WHAT'S THE INNER CORE?
The inner core consists of four muscle groups: the transverse abdominis, diaphragm, pelvic floor muscles, and mulitfidi (tiny back muscles). These muscles hold internal organs and stabilize the core.

The inner core muscles work together, relaxing and contracting during diaphragmatic breath. The pressure deep inside your abdominal cavity changes in concert with your breath. It’s this tightening and relaxing that provides stability for your trunk. Your inner core activates prior to core-based motions, like reaching and stepping, to create a stable platform for optimal, and injury-free, movement.

Pregnancy can bring unique inner core challenges for women. As the belly grows, abdominal tissue can thin and separate down the middle. Nearly 4 in 10 women report this pregnancy-related separation of the abdominal muscles, medically known as diastasis recti. While this is the body’s normal process for accommodating a growing fetus, proper care postpartum can ensure that appropriate tension and activation of the abdominals improve our function and reduce the risk of side effects related to diastasis recti.

A weakened, dysfunctional core can be the cause of a host of other problems including chronic low back pain, urinary incontinence, constipation, pain during sex, decreased sports performance, instability, and pelvic or hip pain.

WHAT IS AN INNER CORE SPECIALIST?
An Inner Core Specialist uses breath training, manual therapy, and specific exercise prescription to retrain the brain to execute movement with optimal motor patterns. Training your brain to be more aware of the way inner core function impacts the body system can decrease unnecessary load on ancillary muscles — reducing pain, spasm, incontinence, and faulty movement patterns. An inner core specialist, I use manual therapy, energy work, exercise and more to help you connect and create a coordinated and strong body system.

An Inner Core Specialist can create an individualized program to help you create and strengthen a solid center to ensure daily movements, like climbing stairs and carrying groceries, are strong and pain-free.
