Physical Therapy Don't suffer in silence with chronic pain or stress urinary incontinence. Many of us are taught to "toughen up" and we have all been conditioned to believe that painful periods, and chronic discomfort is in our heads or just something we need to accept. Almost worse than anything is the idea that it is "okay" to leak urine with daily activities and that using pads or designer incontinence underwear is the norm. The truth could not be further from this. The truth is that nothing stays the same. Many women acknowledge pain or leaking with sneezing as "something they can deal with." It is so important to recognize that more likely than not the symptoms will progress. And in fact, chronic pain (pain that has been around 3 months or more) and intermittent leaking can lead to other dysfunctional movement and a decline in function and social interaction limitations.
This is where postpartum women come in. We have been taught that postpartum recovery takes exactly 6 weeks. The current concept of "baby out and back to life" is absolutely not what nature intended. Recovery takes patience, guidance, support and self compassion. No woman recovers from the physical strain of pregnancy and delivery in exactly the same way. Often, it is the time in life when the symptoms of back pain, pelvic pain or incontinence are rooted. Taking the time to be proactive about postpartum recovery is one of the most empowering things you can do for yourself.
Coaching I have learned through years of treating that it is a rare occasion that tackling pain management or stress urinary incontinence does not also include the need for coaching with a focus on time management, nutritional guidance or stress management. That is precisely why I began to integrate coaching into my practice. I am naturally inclined to want to empower my clients in their journey to recovery, rather than "fix" them and create a dependent relationship. There are some women who need to tackle stress, nutrition and mindset concepts before they can successfully reach their functional goals. Whether you have chronic back pain, pelvic pain or a diagnosis such as endometriosis or pcos, getting your nervous system relaxed is the first step to recovery. Newburyport Wellness, LLC is passionate about empowering women to reconnect with their body to own their health journey. I have dedicated my career to helping women reconnect with their body to solve pelvic health issues with a holistic approach.
